I didn't know you, Mario, but you and my "Aunt Rita" drowned in the same home Katrina morning. My cousin, Rosemary, is your wife and she watched both of you drown. My mom, Mary Ann Trentecosta also drowned in her home that morning. I'm sure she knew you, she was close to Rosemary. So many people left earth that day, I hope that you were able to meet on the other side and reunite with other family members. We'll all be together one day! You were a hero before you died because you saved Sidney and Rosemary. I am so proud of you and grateful for your concern for their lives. You were always my favorite priest and I always wished that they would re-assign you to our parish, but I know St. Nicholaus and Lake Catherine were a bit of heaven on earth. I wish that I had stopped by at St. Nicholaus on my last motorcycle drive through Lake Catherine, I will always regret not doing so. You will always be greatly missed by all who met and knew you. I moved away from the Parish when I was a child, but the one person I remember 35 years later, was Father Red. You gave me my first communion and guided me through my confirmation. Papa, as the days go by I think of you often, as you know it is difficult to comprehend what happened to all of us especially Mama, we lost all of our physical and earthly possessions but most of all we lost YOU but please know that it was difficult to grieve but be assured we have not forgotten you. THE LAST TIME I SAW "AUNT RITA" (REALLY MY DAD'S 1ST COUSIN) WAS AT MY MOM'S NEW LITTLE HOME IN CHALMETTE IN 2003. WE WERE HOSTING A BABY SHOWER FOR MY NIECE, KRISTYN, WHO WAS EXPECTING HER FIRST CHILD, KYLE. AUNT RITA LOVED FAMILY GATHERINGS AND WAS TRULY INTERESTED IN EVERYTHING TAKING PLACE AND ENJOYED ALL THE SNACKS AND GOODIES SERVED. SHE MADE OVER THE GIFTS AND EXAMINED EACH ONE CAREFULLY. HOW ADORABLE AT 82YEARS OF AGE TO BE SO HAPPY TO WELCOME A NEW LITTLE BOY INTO THE FAMILY. SHE WAS THRILLED TO BE A PART OF THE EVENT AND ALWAYS SAID HOW APPRECIATIVE SHE WAS TO BE INVITED TO THESE THINGS. IT'S UNDERSTANDABLE HOW ALL OUR ELDERLY FAMILY MEMBERS DESIRE IS FOR US TO SPEND A LITTLE TIME WITH THEM. THEY DON'T TRULY NEED ANYTHING ELSE BUT TO KNOW THEY ARE LOVED, APPRECIATED, AND IN OUR THOUGHTS. AUNT RITA EVACUATED TO HER NIECE, ROSEMARY GARDENER'S HOME IN ARABI WHERE A WALL OF WATER ENGULFED THE HOME AND, ROSEMARY WATCHED HER GO UNDERWATER AS THEY WERE STRUGGLING TO HOIST SIDNEY, ROSEMARY'S HANDICAPPED SON, INTO THE ATTIC. THE WATER CAME SO FAST AS ROSEMARY CLIMBED THE ATTIC STAIRS, SHE TURNED AROUND AND ALSO WATCHED HER HUSBAND,MARIO, DROWN. MY OWN MOM LOST HER LIFE THAT SAME MORNING AS AUNT RITA AND MARIO...SHE DROWNED WHILE TAKING A NAP AFTER THE MAJOR PART OF THE STORM WAS OVER AND THE WALL OF WATER SLAMMED INTO HER HOME. SO HOPEFULLY THEY ARE ALL REUNITED ON THE OTHER SIDE--HEAVENLY YOUNGSTERS KEEPING WATCH OVER ALL OF US THEY LEFT BEHIND UNTIL WE CAN GET THERE, TOO. MEANWHILE, WE'LL BE MISSING THEM TREMENDOUSLY AND HOLD THEM CLOSE IN THOUGHT AND FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS.
